You might be wondering...

While we may be able to anticipate some of the questions our company has received over the decades, every client has different concerns and priorities. We absolutely if you have a question not on this list, and would be glad to answer it via phone or email.

How long does it take to get a website?

From sign-up, we would like to see a site go up within 3 months. 3 months is a good estimate assuming you have all the content already or we are converting content from an old site. We can do rush jobs, and we can also work at your own pace as long as your pace isn't more than 12 months. As we develop the plan for your site, we will see how long each individual element (photography of your store, product skus, your logo in a readable format) will take. We will discuss your expected time frame when we first talk we will adjust our schedules and prices accordingly.

Can you convert my old site? How do I transfer to you?

Because we run our own content management system we cannot take over the hosting of an old site and update it, although we can help you with the SEO on that site.
We'd be glad to convert your previous design into our CMS and match as much functionality as possible, but we also want you to consider why you're interested in keeping a site that wasn't working for you before.

Transferring to us just requires a signed agreement and your domain name information. We will set up a web space for you and connect it to your domain name.

How do I get my inventory on the site?

1. You can upload an initial CSV to populate your site, then manually update it like you would your POS.
2. You can connect your EDGE POS and upload your inventory nightly.
3. You can take your own photos and manually manage the online inventory.
4. You can get photos from vendors and manually upload those manually.

If you are a jewelry store, you can begin telling your vendors that you need the photography associated with the products you are buying from. They can email you, or us, and you can get high quality images of your existing in-store merchandise that way.

In the interim, you can look at your products, determine what is the best selling, what is the shiniest and newest, what is the most current for the season, and what you want to give more push to on the web. You can get those images from the manufacturer as well. Just make sure you say you need them for web; jpg-for-print files won't work. (We call those CMYK and we need RGB)

After you have your jpgs and pngs in order, you log into your system with one of us on the line, and we show you how it's done. You'll be able to sort them the way you need to, put them in the categories appropriate, and upload multiple angles for your products, too.

Do I have to have a storefront to get a website with you folks?

Jeweler Websites Inc. has made websites for single person jewelry designers, single store retail stores, multiple store retail stores, vendors with storefronts, vendors with private offices, web-only jewelers, appraisers, appointment-only consignment, and jewelry buying groups, among others.

If you're in the biz, we know your work and will do the best at representing it.

What are my design options?

You can see our tried and true designs that have been tested for maximum effectiveness here and we will modify them to fit your needs and your store.

Many of these designs require essential, basic store photography such as inside, outside, staff, and very often the the bench -- in addition to all those fabulous photos of your jewelry.

How much time do I need to spend on my site every day?

Someone, if not you as the owner or store manager, needs to keep up on the site the same way you would behind the counter or on the phone. The more time you spend expanding the site, the better your chances at getting people to buy from you.

Should I sell online? Can I sell online? Would I sell online?

Eventually you will have to sell online. Is that today, tomorrow, or next year? Predicting the future of ecommerce is tough, but there's no denying that every retail industry is moving towards ecommerce in some way shape or form. We are absolutely capable of providing a full shopping cart system to your website, but do not require it of our clients. Our product catalog system works without the need to sell online, and if/when you decide to sell online, you can upgrade.

What happens if you go out of business?

Let's be blunt here. If you're a retail jeweler that's been in the industry since before 2007, it's more likely you will go out of business before we do.

The industry landscape today is much different than when we entered in 2003. Jewelry designers and vendors are shaking up the norm by selling direct online and cutting out the local retail jewelers. Established retail stores have to pivot faster and break the old style of thinking.

But we get it; in this uncertain economy (and we've lasted through several recessions), you need to be able to protect yourself. Fair enough--you'll always own your dedicated domain name (never us) and you'll be able to transfer the data to another web firm should the need come up. However, you will not have the exclusive GlitterPaw software that runs the site.

What do I do when the website is done?

This is a tricky one, because websites are never "done," and no one likes to hear that. We can fulfill the the agreement you sign, and put in all the pieces to make the site present your business as it stands, but you're open tomorrow, and the next day.

We'd like to help you create a post-launch schedule of how you can keep updating your website on your own or have us do it for you. The more you update and expand your site, the better chances you have to attract new customers.

Who edits my site? You? Me?

We can train anyone in your office, with your authorization, how to modify the website from adding products to keeping your store hours correct. This is usually done via phone, and tech support and quick questions/check-ins can be handled via phone or email.

We can also set up a support plan for the store who needs us to edit your site throughout the year.

Where is my website hosted?

Stellium Networks is our web hosting provider. Our websites are usually set up as shared virtual servers with a few sites on each server. We can also set up a dedicated server for you, which you'll need anyway if you are running the GlitterPaw POS.

Do you handle SEO? Oh, what is SEO?

Hello, yes.

First, Search Engine Optimization, better known as SEO, is the process of tweaking your website so search engines better understand what services you provide or what products you sell. We hope to get that right when the site goes live, but sometimes search engines (ahem, Google) make that difficult until the site is up and indexed (found) in search engine results.

What we do: Google Search Console Analysis • Google Analytics Analysis • Keyword Report: What works? What's broken? What's needed? • Basic SEO Fixing: Page Titles; Meta Descriptions; 301 Redirecting Dead Pages • Website Content Fixing: Rewriting Bad Keyword Stuffing; Bulking Up Thin Content; Adding IMG ALT Attributes; Adding/Correcting HTML tags; • Blog SEO Fixing: Review/Improving Blog Tags; Recommending New Blogs; Fix Meta Descriptions • Website Structure Fixing: 404 Error Page Adding/Updating; Add Nofollow to Overhead Pages; Adding/Updating XML Sitemap; Adding/Updating Robots.txt •

What we don't do and you shouldn't pay people for: SEO plans based on number of keywords, search engine "submission," link building, on-page optimization, keyword density, directory submission.

You'll learn a lot about SEO and what we do if you take some time to read our SEO page.

What about email?

We don't host emails any more. We can set up emails with our server host and configure them for you. You would pay Stellium Networks directly for your email hosting.

What's a secure website? What's a secure certificate?

A secure web site has the ability to encrypt all the information being sent over the internet. This means your web visitors can safely enter their personal information and their credit card number and feel safe knowing that they are protected against identity theft. This encryption is achieved with a Secure Certificate that you will need to pay for.

As your web hosting company we have to order the secure certificate for you. Typically we order them from Stellium Networks since they are less expensive than others. The cost of the certificate is about $139 (subject to change), which you will need to pay for using a credit card. There are different version of certificates that will either verify your domain ownership or verify that you are a legitimate company. The higher level certificates are more expensive and will provide a greater level of trust to your customers.

How do I see who's coming to my site?

Google Analytics can be added to any site so you can track visitors and what they are looking at. We also have built-in tracking that can monitor products, categories, pages, and actions of visitors who are logged into your site.

Our built-in tracking is a resource hog and will require you to have a larger than normal hosting plan with us. Depending on your website activity you might even need a dedicated server with a large hard drive to store all that data.

What if in a year, I want to change the design of my site?

We are glad to keep your site updated in the finished design for as long as you wish. When you are ready for a new site, either for re-branding or because your store has changed, we will be glad to discuss refreshing the site. Very rarely is it appropriate for a complete teardown, and we can show you how different the site can looked just by switching up some elements or the colors, and photography plays a large part in it. However, if it is time to do a brand new site, we will find, together, the most cost effective and time effective method and you will never be startled by an unexpected bill.

Remember, redesign is not a seasonal activity. Your return customers will become irritated if your website is not the same as they expected it to be last time they were there. Inevitably, they've returned because something they saw earlier caught their memory. Don't alienate them by mixing it up too much, or just for the sake of it.

What keywords should I use for my SEO?

Start with the basic words or phrases that describe what services you offer and products you sell. Those basic phrases will then be used in a keyword research process to discover if any pages of your site are ranking for those words yet. Additional research will will uncover expanded permutations of long-tail phrases that may be better to use than the original basic words. Keep in mind that the basic keywords you say as a jewelry professional may not be what the general public uses. Continual keyword research will slowly reveal how your customers think and what they search for.

What is a landing page?

For us, this is any page of your website that has a good chance of appearing in Google search results. Initially this is just your home page and the first page of every subsection of your site. A well written blog post can also be a landing page if the content is valuable and answers a question someone asks in a Google search. Individual product pages could also be landing pages if they have enough detail. The main subsections of your jewelry catalog, like the bracelets main page, can also be thought of as a landing page.

What is misleading content?

We get it. The internet is flooded with spin sales pitches and hyperbole. Many people talk a good talk without having the experience of what they are doing. Misleading your customers by hiding behind keyword stuffed sales pitches will eventually lead to bad online customer reviews. Just don't do it. Let's remove the over-hype in your sales messages and give consumers what they need to make an informed purchase decision.

What is thin content?

Every page or your site and all product descriptions should have all the information needed for your website visitor to make their next decision. That could be a decision to click the next link or it could be the decision to make a purchase. Any page that leaves a person guessing at their next step would be considered thin. Thin pages are less likely to appear in search results because Google does not like to show users pages that will make them left wanting more.

What is keyword stuffing?

Keyword stuffing is an old search engine optimization technique whereby you would overuse the same few keywords several times on a single page. Back when search engines relied more on statistical uses of words, you could rank your page higher if you repeated yourself a lot. This usually made the pages cumbersome for people to read but the mathematical search engines assumed those repeated words were good. Today this overzealous word usage is considered a bad, or "black hat," SEO technique and it doesn't work any more.

Why am I not ranking for a keyword phrase?

If you are not appearing anywhere in search results for a phrase it's probably because that exact phrase does not appear anywhere on your website. For example, if you wanted to rank for blue diamonds then you need to have that phrase on one, or several pages. Sometime you wont rank even when you use common SEO procedures to optimize a page. In those situation you have to investigate if your competitors are better than you or if there's something wrong with your website. Many times you can find the reasons within your Google Search Console or a good SEO Analyst can figure it out.

How long does it take to show in search results?

There's no solid answer for this. Search engines are automated and on a set schedule. Once your site is optimized you can either use Google Search Console to request a reindexing of your site, or you can wait until the next scheduled visit from the Googlebot. Circumstances are always different, but it could be days, weeks, or months. You can usually see improved ranking from the deep levels of results towards page one, but the closer you get to page one the harder the process becomes.

Do I show the same in everyone's search results?

No. Everyone sees different search results based on their physical location and their previous search history. As part of the SEO process you need to choose a geographic location to target and make sure all your SEO reporting is based on that location.

Do search results change mobile to desktop?

Yes. Google uses geolocation to determine where you are when doing a search. Many mobile searches for products or services will often yield results of businesses that are right around the corner from you. We call that "hyper-local." That why it's so important for a retail jeweler to optimize their mobile site and all their local business settings in Google My Business. Desktop searches will still show local results, but will add in other expanded options.
